Oioi Gathering

Oioi Gathering

Result from Saturday July 25th gathering. Well, at least I still could recognize you all, so nothing’s changed.

I dunno what time exactly it began, but I arrived late at 13:00 and they all were still sitting and chatting at Mall Taman Anggrek Foodcourt. Our guest star at the day was Surti who was imported from USA but still made in Indonesia (local content: 100%).

Movie Review: Red Cliff

This is my first post after upgrading my wordpress to 2.6 :)

My Rating for this movie : 7.5 of 10
Red Cliff

From Wiki: Red Cliff (?? chi bi) is two-part movie directed by John Woo to bring back story on the Battle of Red Cliffs and events during the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China. stars Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Hu Jun, Lin Chi-ling and Zhao Wei. With an estimated budget of US$80 million, Red Cliff is the most expensive Asian-financed film to date.

I can say that story telling is superb and describing war strategy in quite a good way. This movie first part is pretty long: 2 hours and 10 minutes, but all casts are in there in their own enough screen time. From perspective of non-Three Kingdoms-novel-reader, I think you will not get lost in the story, it describes each character quite well until you can learn them more from wiki or history book. Some parts of this movie has subplot you can watch in Three Kingdoms movie about General Zhao (played by Andy Lau).

What a failure of this movie is at its cast. Besides Tony Leung, Zhao Wei, and Chang Chen, I think cast for Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro), Guan Yu and Zhang Fei is disappointing. I prefer cast at Three Kingdom (Ressurection of the Dragon) as it is more realistic. Also this movie stuntmen are all not screen friendly, fighting scene also lose to some other epic movie. Another lack is music, as far as I know there is no themesong in this film.

Just cannot wait for the second part of this movie, which is expected to screen on January 2009.

Living in HD World

A Samsung LCD TV and HD-Upscale DVD Player Review.

It’s been more than one month I bought a new tv set into my house. The desire to watch Euro 2008 Football in LCD urged me into electronic shop to find LCD TVs. My favourite brand for LCD TV was 3S: Sony, Samsung, and Sharp. So couple weeks before Euro cup I finally grab Samsung LCD TV LA32R81 from Electronic Store (ES), interest free for 12 month installment. The price was IDR 6,300,000 (just divided by 12 for installment), but using BCA Credit Card it gave us cash back IDR 200,000 into card account.

samsung LA32R81Samsung LCDTV LA32R81 Bordeaux design is very excellent. It gives a bit impression of a wine glass by putting a glowing light at the bottom of the LCD screen. Contrast Ratio is 8000:1 with 1360×786 pixel resolution and it is more than enough for daily tv or dvd watch. The remote control in my opinion is too long but slim. With HDMI-CEC technology, we can control other devices connected to this LCD using TV remote. By programming the remote, we can even use this remote to control major brand VCR, DVD Player, cable box, etc. Smart enough.

English Service Sunday Mass in Jakarta

Last Sunday I went to St. Theresia Catholic Church in Menteng Jakarta. It held English Service sunday mass on 11am for catholic community, mainly attended by expatriates and foreigners who live in Jakarta such as Americans, Africans (a lot), and Filipinos. If you are Indonesian do not worry losing tongue, just come and try as long as you are familiar with English.

For those of you don’t know the place, it is located one block behind Sarinah building in Thamrin, Central Jakarta. Stop at Sarinah Busway, walk 3 minutes along the Sunda Road between Sarinah and Embassy of France, at the road end you should see it. Parking car was horrible, so better to park a bit far and have some walk since the location is very green and convenient.

Mass was delivered by Indonesian priest who speak fluent English, all songs in English. And don’t worry about lyrics, all songs’ lyrics are printed and can be grabbed in front door.

Not to mention after mass you can have delicious Gelato in Pisa Cafe, directly opposite the church!

After so many years attending same ritual in Indonesian languange, I found myself refreshed not only by its atmosphere but also in prayers and songs. Amen.

I did it

Ahah.. not so important, but just a little self-achievement. I got my new certificate, can be called as “Mozilla Firefox 3 Certified Downloader:)
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The certificate was given because I participated in Firefox 3 download on its launching date (Firefox Download Day: 6/17/08). FYI, Firefox 3 was downloaded by more than 8 million users in 24 hour period after its launching.

I guess I will print this certificate and frame it to put on my desk :)

A Weekend with a Crashed Mac

If you think your Mac OS X is as solid as a building brick, you are wrong. Something shit can happen that causes OS X fail to load.

Apple MacbookI got this crash experience recently with my OS X. As technical spec, I have MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz, DDR 1.5 GB, HDD 80 GB, with OS X Leopard 10.5.2 before crash. The initial cause of problem was my Macbook battery not detected anymore. Then in some bright days the power adapter had got unplugged accidentally, so the Mac OS got to sudden shutdown. This happened several times, so in one day I tried to do Verify Disk via Disk Utility. It told me some errors. Then when the 10.5.3 update was released by Apple, I downloaded it and tried to install the update in high hope that it can fix my problem. Totally wrong! The update only went half of the way just to say something error to update my root folder. Then it freezed, Finder couldn’t be used at all. Then I pressed the magic power button for a while to force it to shutdown. And here was the situation: OS X would not load anymore. It booted, shown Apple logo, dark screen, and restarted, kept restarting.
