Hi! My mac os leapart crashed outand now grey screen appears. I tried the method you offered, but “/Volumes/Alist Mac/Users/UserName/" in this step my mac os says, there is no such directory, indicating to Alist Mac(in my case Macintosh HD). However after ls -s command i could see the directory. Can you offer me another way to back up my files in crashed Mac os x leopart?
Thank you

[...] Clean Install OS X Leopard from scratch. This means all your date is gone (unless you have backup elsewhere), you have to install all your applications, hours of work and pain. If you prefer this, please read my post about how to backup data when OS X cannot boot. [...]

@Rommy Remember that this is the first crash after a year of use and sudden shutdown was the cause, so nothing to worry about if everything goes smooth. still get a Mac :)
