Riding Bicycle in Amsterdam

Netherland is bicycle heaven. Every city, any places, we can easily find someone is riding bicycle in his daily activity, from walk his dog, shopping, go to university or workplace.

So as a tourist, this activity should not be missed. It is fun and healthy, also cheap (if you own one). Rent a bike is also very convenient as many places, Amsterdam in particular, are offering bike rental. One day rent of bike is from 8-12 Euro. Deposit is required, either by placing your cash or by credit card. This is deposit to ensure that you will return the bike back to its workshop. Also paying insurance is optional (3 Euro) against theft.

One thing to note is the bike we rent usually is dutch classic, granny bike. It features one speed only with pedal break. It will take little time to get accustomed to operate this kind of bicycle. After paying rental fee and deposit, follow bike lock instruction shown by rental company staff. Then take your bike to the road. Most of roads in Amsterdam have special dedicated bicycle lane, so it is very safe as long as you follow traffic rule (bike usually is prioritized against cars).

Jakarta to Bandung by Train

May be we get used to taking car to everywhere so we forget that we have reliable train network in Java. This time JavaMilk wants to have a little adventure by not taking car as usual to Bandung.

To secure your seat, it is advisable to reserve and buy in advance, especially during long weekend or peak period. Online booking is still not possible, but you can check route and schedule using PT KAI Website. Luggage Tag from KLM

Just received personalized luggage tag from KLM sent to my address, took longer than expected but the design is pretty good.

I forget the date, must be one or two month ago, KLM offered via email to make free personalized luggage tag, you could choose one of several designs, from scenery (like mine: Venice Gondola) to traveling people photo,  and put your name or other information on the behind. One applicant would get 2 identical luggage tags from KLM.

Now one tag is hung on my backpack, unlike in the photos the tag will be kept inside actually.

Visiting Ancient Gajah Mada Plaza

One of the happening place in Jakarta during 1980s is Gajah Mada Plaza. Traveling to Jakarta without visiting it would be shameful to tell your relatives. It was big and well-known at that time, 7 storeys, many stores, and not to forget the famous Rimo Department Store. Visiting this place during my childhood would take 2-3 hours completed with meal at Kentucky Fried Chicken or MacD.

Those golden ages had gone. New shopping malls with much bigger space spring in Jakarta, and people’s changed too. Although located at Central Jakarta, it is not the main spot of gathering place anymore. Rimo has closed its business, now replaced with Matahari Dept Store, what left is MacD (now Tony Jack), Optik Seis, and the ‘as always’ GM 21 Cineplex.

New Travel Series: Thailand

After writing the articles for 3 weeks, finally I can now officially publish my latest travel guide: Panduan Jalan ke Thailand.

As you might know from my previous post, I went to Bangkok, Krabi, Phi Phi Islands, and Phuket on late March 2010. So this is my pleasure to write and share my experience and journey.

Why Thailand? In 2009, Thailand attracts more than 14 million tourists to the country, that’s a huge number of visitors and competing with neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore. And for Indonesian, going to Thailand is like a new destination after boring with weekend escape to Singapore or KL (do you feel that?).

Okay, just continue reading on Panduan Jalan Jalan ke Thailand for more pleasure.

Out of Office: Going to Thailand

Surprise for me when I was selected and invited to go to Thailand by TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) Jakarta Office (www.wisatathailand.com). Invitation to attend TAT’s Golden Jubilee Grand Reception as well as to join tour exploring Bangkok, Phuket, and the Phi Phi Island. As this is my first time to Thailand, this should be a great opportunity to explore this country.

Updated on 10 April 2010 : Now let’s enjoy reading my newest articles Panduan Jalan ke Thailand
