Travelling Abroad with unlimited Internet flat rate

Having Internet access during traveling is almost mandatory for me as I have to regularly check business emails as well as responding to customers inquiries. Many hotels offers free wifi or Internet connection during your stay. We can find free hotspot in restaurant and cafe as well.

But for those who wants to get connected all the time, whether using Blackberry, iPhone, or other mobile devices, finding free hotspot means you can’t be mobile as you have to sit on free hotspot location to get connected. The solution is clear, you have to pay for data plan. This will also eliminate your necessity to choose lousy hotel because they offer free Internet service.

First option is you have to buy local GSM SIM card, but you will loose ability to be contacted with your Indonesian number. This may also more expensive for Internet usage only, but for cheap local calls you must choose this option.

The other option is to bring your own Indonesian number and activate roaming service. You can be reached using your own number, but beware of expensive roaming rate. Apparently there is another plus point of bringing your own country GSM: Unlimited Internet with flat rate.

iPad and Mifi : The New Travel Companion

Bringing laptop during travelling is very handy, as we need to stay online or check email wherever we are. But laptop (or you may bring netbook) is (sometime) heavy, and battery life cannot last for long-haul flight (unless you sit in business class that offers electric plug).

So, iPad is coming to save the world. It is lightweight, less than 800g, can be used for 10+ hours of work, at least you can watch movies or play hours of game in your flight across continent. What do you want to do? Read emails, rss, work with documents or presentations, play games, listen to music? Most of laptop functionality are there in iPad. When AmericanAirlines offers inflight wifi, you could not be happier since you can browse Internet to kill time.

Adobe CS4 Installation and License Check

This is a bit unrelated to my usual post, but hope this is useful for you.

I managed to install Adobe CS4 for Mac for editing some design stuff. After successful installation, when I launched one of the programs (Photoshop CS4, inDesign CS4, etc), the message box popped up in my Snow Leopard screen: “licensing for this product has stopped working“. A new breed of license check different from earlier CS3.

After google a bit and try some solution offered by people, here I summarize my step to get rid of the error message and go straight into Photoshop CS4.

Please note, my system may be different from yours. I use Mac OS X 10.6.6 (any command below works for OS X 10.5 and 10.6), Installation of CS4 is default to /Applications folder.

  1. Open Terminal.app
  2. Edit file /etc/hosts using your own editor. (I used TextWrangler editor)
    edit /etc/hosts
  3. When my editor display the file content, it may ask for permission to unlock the file (actually you can issue sudo, but TextWrangler can handle this kind of permission issue).
  4. Paste the following code between 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost and ::1 localhost
    127.0.0.1 adobe.activate.com

    cd "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PCD/cache"
    rm "cache.db"
    cd "/Library/Preferences"
    rm -R "FLEXnet Publisher"

Jakarta Street Map now available in Google Map

It seems that Google is working really hard to make its Google Map accessible to everyone, even for Indonesian. As I check today, Google Map now showing Jakarta street map in detail, including offering driving direction if possible.

Jakarta streets (as we know) is messy and very narrow in some places, in Google Map it displays road that car-passable by 2 lane (not ‘Jalan Tikus’).

Jakarta street map

Inline with the coming of iPhone 3G to Indonesia brought by Telkomsel, using Google Map inside iPhone (GPS) or iPod Touch (wifi based) will be very handy and useful if you live in Jakarta and surroundings.
