Sanyo Xacti HD1010 User Review

As I planned to have a video camera before my first daughter born, I tried hard to find a good one – in High Definition format. Last time when I was in Shanghai on March 08, I almost purchased Sanyo Xacti HD1000 for 4100 RMB, luckily saved by self-control device (read: money). Now, 6 months later, after browsing and find people review of HD video cam, I ended up in 2 options: Sanyo Xacti HD1000 / HD1010 or Canon HF100. Both have different plus points.

Xacti product brand is always come into a pistol-gun size, ergonomic and fit into a palm, easy to carry to anywhere without needing big bag. Even it can be slipped into jeans pocket. It is lightweight because uses flash memory instead of using mini DV or Harddisk as storage.

Canon HF100 is the latest lineup from Canon, comes in HD output format, also uses flash memory as storage (HF10 model comes with internal memory). Plus point is it uses OIS (Optical Image Stabilizer) to minimalize hand shake.

Wave of Netbook: Axioo Pico

Before we start, to be honest that I don’t have Axioo Pico, but I’d like to post a Axioo Pico netbook review.

Netbook term means sub-notebook, mainly be used only for light-working and Internet browsing activities. You might be already noticed some PC manufacturers trying to deliver this kind of small laptop to market. Currently in Indonesia, netbook is still a new term with small market, that will be booming in few years ahead.

The first and successful one is Asus Eee PC. Long queue on its first launching means that people really needs affordable laptop. Another Taiwan company, MSI also launched MSI Wind Netbook on May 2008. And in this post I’d like to talk about relatively new Singapore-based PC manufacturer Axioo with its latest product: Axioo Pico.

Telkomsel Babycam

If you are a working parent, then everyday you want to monitor your children activities in your house. How to monitor your loved ones? Sure you’ll call them. But if you leave them with a nanny then you might need a spy webcam just to make sure that your nanny does her work.

Telkomsel offers a new solution for this by launching Telkomsel Babycam. It’s a small 3G mobile device with built-in camera, packed like a MotorGP helmet miniatur, using GSM 3G network and Video Call feature (in which is actually not a new technology in Indonesia), all you need is to use your 3G mobile phone to video call that device, then your mobile phone will be live streaming what happens in your house, same like CCTV camera. Video Call rate will be charged same as voice call, so it is about Rp 13/second, CMIIW.

Living in HD World

A Samsung LCD TV and HD-Upscale DVD Player Review.

It’s been more than one month I bought a new tv set into my house. The desire to watch Euro 2008 Football in LCD urged me into electronic shop to find LCD TVs. My favourite brand for LCD TV was 3S: Sony, Samsung, and Sharp. So couple weeks before Euro cup I finally grab Samsung LCD TV LA32R81 from Electronic Store (ES), interest free for 12 month installment. The price was IDR 6,300,000 (just divided by 12 for installment), but using BCA Credit Card it gave us cash back IDR 200,000 into card account.

samsung LA32R81Samsung LCDTV LA32R81 Bordeaux design is very excellent. It gives a bit impression of a wine glass by putting a glowing light at the bottom of the LCD screen. Contrast Ratio is 8000:1 with 1360×786 pixel resolution and it is more than enough for daily tv or dvd watch. The remote control in my opinion is too long but slim. With HDMI-CEC technology, we can control other devices connected to this LCD using TV remote. By programming the remote, we can even use this remote to control major brand VCR, DVD Player, cable box, etc. Smart enough.

A Weekend with a Crashed Mac

If you think your Mac OS X is as solid as a building brick, you are wrong. Something shit can happen that causes OS X fail to load.

Apple MacbookI got this crash experience recently with my OS X. As technical spec, I have MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz, DDR 1.5 GB, HDD 80 GB, with OS X Leopard 10.5.2 before crash. The initial cause of problem was my Macbook battery not detected anymore. Then in some bright days the power adapter had got unplugged accidentally, so the Mac OS got to sudden shutdown. This happened several times, so in one day I tried to do Verify Disk via Disk Utility. It told me some errors. Then when the 10.5.3 update was released by Apple, I downloaded it and tried to install the update in high hope that it can fix my problem. Totally wrong! The update only went half of the way just to say something error to update my root folder. Then it freezed, Finder couldn’t be used at all. Then I pressed the magic power button for a while to force it to shutdown. And here was the situation: OS X would not load anymore. It booted, shown Apple logo, dark screen, and restarted, kept restarting.

Which one you choose: Pertamina GazCard vs BCA Flazz

Pertamina GazCardAfter long rumor and planning (as I wrote in Teknolagi), you may notice that more and more fuel gas station in Jakarta (may be other cities in Indonesia) and suburbs are equipped with BCA EDC, BCA Flazz, and Bank Mandiri - Pertamina GazCard. Flazz and GazCard are contact-less smartcard, which just have to tap card into the reader and you balance will be transferred to seller in less than a minute. So you don’t have to pay with cash to buy fuel. You have many options now: your Visa / Mastercard Credit card (surcharge 2%), BCA Flazz (no surcharge) and Pertamina GazCard (also no surcharge/fee).

Despite not utilized and not many people knowing and using this kind of transaction, I am pretty sure this will be a hit starting from next year. Which one you prefer: GazCard or Flazz?

GazCard is sold with co-branding with Bank Mandiri, is limited use only at fuel station. You couldn’t find other stores accepting this kind of prepaid card.  And it is a bit hard to top-up its balance since you have to go to SPBU / Fuel station to do it. So I think not flexible enough if this card is not accepted anywhere else.

BCA Flazz CardIn the other hand, Bank Central Asia promotes Flazz Card aggressively these days. Easily can you find BCA stands in malls offering you BCA Flazz promotion (remember the spelling: not Flash). And you know BCA, its vast network and technology. You can find a lot of stores accepting FlazzCard, such as: Hoka-Hoka Bento, Starbucks, KFC, Indomaret, and may more. So you know that this card will exist for longer time. Have you ever heard of JakCard issued by Bank DKI for Busway Ride? its in half-dead now because small network and lack of publications.

So I prefer BCA Flazz for its vast network, but actually I will more support 3rd independent company approved by government instead of single bank entity. That will ensure single adoption and use in public transportation as legal payment. Just think that you can ride TransJakarta Busway with this kind of card, paying food, paying toll-road fee / freeway, and monorail (in development). Offering different card just confusing people and in the end all will dead if no dominant player wins.

Just learn from successful implementation in Singapore (ez-Link Card), Hong Kong with Octopus Card, and London with Oyster Card. All issued by local government or a 3rd party company setup by government, not a banking institution to avoid monopoly.
